Please join in an important briefing on the Climate Equity Act, a draft proposal by US Senator Harris & US Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, that would help ensure frontline communities are prioritized in the clean energy transition and centered in efforts to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change.
Speakers:Lew Daly, Senior Policy Analyst, DEMOS and Isaac Irby, Senior Advisor to US Senator Kamala Harris
Background: As momentum for a Green New Deal grows and the possibility of bold and comprehensive climate action is taking shape, there is a gaping hole in current governance of federal climate actions: standard regulatory procedures and legislative assessments do not account for equity impacts of climate actions. Senator Kamala Harris’ Climate Equity Act proposes a solution to this problem that should be of considerable interest to climate movement stakeholders who prioritize equity, and particularly racial equity, in the climate fight. The legislative proposal is now out for public and stakeholder comment and will be introduced later this fall.
Senator Harris has developed this legislation explicitly from the standpoint of holding the government accountable for centering climate action on the needs of the most climate-impacted communities, and, in line with that, she is prioritizing frontline stakeholder feedback to refine and improve the legislative proposal. Senator Harris’ climate policy advisor Isaac Irby will be joined by Lew Daly of Demos for a short presentation and then a Q & A and discussion with network members. Please join us to share your ideas about this important proposal for ensuring equity accountability in our federal climate solutions.
